Cirque du Soleil Presents OvoNew Cirque du Soliel Production Debuts this Spring in Montreal
Cirque du Soleil presents Ovo, its 25th show in 25 years. The show is presented under the blue and yellow big top in Montreal, Quebec City, and Toronto.
Ovo, in Portuguese, means egg. In the language of Cirque du Soleil, Ovo means magical story-telling, lyrical rhythms, colorful eye-catching costumes, and heart-pounding acrobatics all centered in a place where bugs, insects, and creepy crawlies take center stage. Ovo writer, director, and choreographer Deborah Colker took inspiration from the documentary film “MicroCosmos,” a 2005 movie that took a close-up look at the very tiny world of backyard bugs. “Colker felt it would be an interesting concept to enter into the world of insects and to show that world to the human eye,” said Ovo artistic director Marjon Van Grunsven. In Ovo, a cast of 53 circus artists from 13 countries interprets this unique world of bugs. Butterflies, spiders, crickets, fleas, ladybugs, and ants are all present and accounted for. Costume designer Liz Vandal incorporated colorful organic and synthetic fabrics and materials, and unique pleating techniques to convey, not imitate, a close-up view of bugs. Gringo Cardia’s set design features organic elements such as a spider’s web, a 20-foot mechanical flower, and, of course, a giant mysterious egg. 2009 Montreal Dates for Ovo
